We want to give you an update about how New City is engaging in serving our region.
New City has been given the go ahead to reopen the Gladedale Learning Center and tutors are needed! We hope to start the week of September 28 with safety plans in place. We will be limited to eight people in the learning center at a time, probably four adults and four students. The Learning Center will be open Mondays and Wednesday from 6:00-7:00 pm for elementary students and 7:30-8:30 pm for middle school. If you are interested in tutoring, contact the Serve Department at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Earlier this month, Urban Promise began their fall session providing support for local youth with spiritual, academic, and social support. New City is providing snack bags for the children who attend. One hundred snack bags are needed every Monday through Thursday when school is in session. This is an excellent way for families or community groups to serve without having to be out in public. We have two slots available to provide 50 snack bags each day. If you are sharing this project with others, feel free to sign up for both slots on a given day. The September dates filled quickly so we have opened up more dates and will continue to open dates as slots are filled. Sign up to provide snack bags in October or November. Email email@example.com with any questions.
When children enter foster care, the plan for reunification with their birth families usually involves regular visitation with the family, typically at Department of Social Services offices under the supervision of DSS caseworkers. This is a crucial time for caseworkers to interact with and support birth families and their child(ren), encouraging healthy play and interaction.
CFK is currently renovating several of these visitation rooms at DSS offices throughout the city. CFK will need materials, toys, books, paint, furniture and volunteers to make this happen. If you would like to provide some of these items, visit CFK's CAREnow Portal. If you would like to donate directly to the DSS renovation project, click here. CFK will purchase items and/or supplies on your behalf.
CFK has other volunteer opportunities including wrapping Christmas gifts for youth in foster care, accompanying youth on field trips, stuffing goody bags, and serving lunch to social workers. Even with the challenges and precautions that come with COVID-19, there's still something for everyone. If you are interested in any of these opportunities or in learning more about volunteering in general, click here to sign up for CFK's next virtual volunteer info session on September 30, 7:00-8:00 pm. Attending an online info session is now required prior to filling out an application and attending a CFK event, even if you have volunteered with CFK previously.
Roof Above needs volunteers to provide bagged lunches for temporary shelters in motels and dorm rooms as well as for their soup kitchen. Click here and scroll down to "New Temporary Shelter Support" to sign up.

The American Red Cross faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations during the coronavirus outbreak. Healthy individuals are needed to donate now to help patients counting on lifesaving blood, platelets or AB Elite plasma. The US Surgeon General has asked healthy adults to consider giving blood to increase the available supply. Visit OneBlood.org or RedCross.org/give-blood to schedule an appointment to donate blood.
