Serve Opportunities During COVID-19

New City Serve

 How You Can Help

We want to give you an update about how New City is engaging in serving our region as we respond to the spread of COVID-19.

(updated 4/3/2020)

New Opportunities

There is an urgent need for volunteers to help pack food for Second Harvest Food Bank. A team of New City volunteers served on April 2 and we will be sending another team on Thursday, April 9 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age to participate. We also request that not only the volunteer be healthy, but everyone in his/her household be as well. Registration is required. Email for a registration link.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you are healthy and want a way to volunteer, below are some of the area’s most immediate needs. These opportunities fall under the category of essential services as defined within the Mecklenburg County Stay at Home Order:

ABOUT: A distribution warehouse providing food to charitable organizations in the Charlotte Region. They need people to process food in the warehouse.

NEED: Volunteers age 17 are needed to inspect, sort, and pack donated products so that they can be distributed to 700 partner agencies including homeless shelters, emergency pantries and soup kitchens.
Volunteer with Second Harvest

ABOUT: An organization that provides outlets for people to get food.
NEED: Volunteers are needed in their warehouse and to stock the mobile pantry.
Volunteer with Loaves and Fishes

ABOUT: A grassroots organization of locals who work to help meet the basic needs of others in their community.
Volunteers are needed to be a backup for delivering groceries to local families on Saturday mornings as well as pick up food donated at local grocery stores six days per week.

The American Red Cross faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations during this coronavirus outbreak. Healthy individuals are needed to donate now to help patients counting on lifesaving blood, platelets or AB Elite plasma.

If you have the supplies, you can help by making masks for Atrium Health to be distributed to patients, families, and community partners, including homeless shelters and nursing homes. Email to receive the sewing instructions.

Financial and Supply Needs

ABOUT: UMC provides support to Charlotte's homeless community.
NEED: Due to COVID-19, UMC has shut down their dining facilities and are handing out to-go meals. Many pre-bagged meals filled with prepackaged items are needed.
UMC is also asking for donations through their Amazon wishlist

ABOUT: UP provides support for local youth with spiritual, academic, and social support to become Christian leaders who are determined to restore their communities.
NEED: Many of the UP street leaders are teens who help support their families. Also, many street leader parents will be affected by the economic impact of the service industry downturn. In response to the COVID-19 disruption, Urban Promise has opened a Family Stability Fund specifically to support the needs of Urban Promise students and families during this uncertain time.

New City Church is a part of a network of churches through ForCLT, which is connected into the larger coordinated effort under the umbrella of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management. That office has asked the faith community and other non-profits to initially focus our efforts on ensuring that students are fed while schools are closed.
CMS has opened 69 feeding sites at schools throughout the district. Two of the sites are at our partner schools Idlewild Elementary and Greenway Park Elementary. We are actively working under the umbrella of the coordinated effort to meet this need. As more needs are identified and as we are asked to help, we will respond. If there is opportunity to serve as part of this coordinated effort, we will let you know.
Right now, the most effective response is giving to the larger coordinated effort. You can do that here through the ForCLT Coronavirus Response Fund.
