A God-sized vision

that will transform how we help people find & follow Jesus

Here, Near, & Far

In the video, Pastor Chris Payne tells the story of Here, Near, & Far—a vision that will transform how we share the gospel, engage with our city, and interact with people around the world.
“Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18–20

A God-Sized Vision

We believe God has given us an incredible vision for the future of New City. In the next 3 years, we hope to raise 40 million dollars to support this vision.

This means we will need to trust God in big ways together. This number includes three years of operational costs and phase one of our vision.

Join us in praying for what your part will be in what God is doing at New City. This fall, make a big faith pledge toward our goal.

Here

We will take the first steps in reimagining our SouthPark location and enhance our Matthews location to increase our capacity to reach our neighbors.

Near

We will collaborate with local partners who share Jesus and make a difference in areas of pain in our city. Church & City, a counseling center, addresses mental health needs in our congregations and beyond. We also partner with Congregations for Kids, Isaiah 117 House, and FARM127 as they work to address the foster care crisis in the greater Charlotte area.

Far

We will plant 2,000+ churches in East Africa with our global partner, The Timothy Initiative, and support several ministries of mercy to demonstrate the love of Jesus in East Africa and around the world.

Why does

it matter For me?

Why does it matter For me?

I am invited into Jesus’ story and his vision for New City.

Setting Goals for Our Vision

While we are making physical changes to our spaces, the focus of each one is about people. Reshaping our NextGen and Worship space at SouthPark will allow you to invite your neighbors to find and follow Jesus.

We also plan to improve our Matthews space, investing in a coffee shop to strategically engage our neighbors and moving the RenewCLT counseling facility to City Co-Op to help meet the needs of our city's mental health crisis.

Goal #1

100% Engagement

Something special happens when your generosity journey and your discipleship journey come together, and we want to see that for our whole congregation. Our primary goal is for 100% of the New City family to join Here, Near, & Far.

Goal #2

$40 Million

$40 Million is a God-sized number that will help us expand God’s Kingdom and grow our individual faith in the process. When every person at New City lives out radical generosity that reflects dependence on God, we know it will powerfully advance the work he is doing in and around us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we doing this?

In 2022 and 2023, our elders and pastoral leadership team began a discernment process, asking God for what comes next in the New City story. From this season of waiting and praying came our go-forward mission: helping people find and follow Jesus here, near, and far.

This mission is the basis for every aspect of our Here, Near, and Far campaign: in order to help people find and follow Jesus, we need space for them to join us for worship, we need to reach out beyond our walls to bring Jesus’ healing to the pain of our community, and we need to equip disciple makers around the world to plant new churches where people will find and follow Jesus.

How much will this cost?

Phase 1 & 2 construction and renovations at SouthPark will cost $20 million, our ministry costs, including global and local ministry partnerships, for three years will be $24 million, and our other Here, Near & Far projects in Matthews and City Co-Op will be $1 million. Altogether, we expect the total to be approximately $45 million. Based on the outcome of giving to Here, Near, and Far, we have the option of taking on $5 million of facility-related debt to enable us to accomplish everything in these phases

What are the phases of construction at New City SouthPark?

Phase 1 – Renovating the wings of the current Worship Center Building into NextGen classroom space

Phase 2 – Demolition of NextGen buildings and building new Worship Center

Phase 3 – Completing renovations of current Worship Center building, multipurpose building, and offices

Phase 4 – Building a Chapel space for mid-sized events

How is this One Fund campaign different?

When you give to New City over the next three years, you are contributing to a single fund that covers everything you already love about New City and our expanded vision for helping people find and follow Jesus here, near, and far.

Traditional giving initiatives often require two different giving amounts—one to the General Fund and one to the Building Fund. We are resourcing Hear, Near, & Far through a unified way of giving called One Fund. If you have additional questions about how it all works, you can email us at herenearfar@newcity.us.

How long will this take?

Our goal is to begin work at our SouthPark location in the spring/summer 2025 and at Matthews and City Co-Op in 2025. If all goes according to plan, we should finish phases 1–2 at SouthPark in 2027.

Why buildings?

We have been entrusted with tremendous facilities at both our SouthPark and Matthews locations. However, currently, we do not have the capacity in our SouthPark worship center to invite friends and neighbors to find and follow Jesus.

At Matthews and City Co-Op, we have been given an incredible opportunity to open our doors to the wider community in our buildings. To do so, we will need to renovate some of the spaces to provide a counseling center and coffee shop.

Now that we have clarified our mission, it’s time to reimagine facilities that truly facilitate our mission to help people find and follow Jesus.

What will be the change to our SouthPark NextGen environments with these renovations and buildings?

We will gain roughly double our capacity for kids and students in our NextGen areas by the end of Phase 3. The new spaces will be larger and more flexible in their use than our current rooms. We currently use 29 classrooms and have five large group spaces which are shared with other ministries of the church.

By the close of Phase 3 (timeline TBD), the renovated building will have 35–38 classrooms and three dedicated large group spaces—for preschool, elementary, and middle/high school.

How many more seats will we have in the new Worship Center relative to the current SouthPark Worship Center?

Our current Worship Center holds a maximum of 677. The new planned Worship Center will be able to hold approximately 1066 seats.

Why Foster Care and Mental Health?

We believe God calls us to meet needs within our city, and during the discernment process, our elders and leaders felt God calling us to engage with strategic city partners, both historic and new) who are doing ministries of mercy to meet major pain points in our city.

We recognize that we cannot do everything, but between our historic partnerships with organizations like Congregations for Kids, Isaiah117 House, and FARM127, who are engaging in the foster care space, and the evident need for mental health care here in Charlotte, these two areas came to the forefront. Our goal is to partner with ministries here in our city and position and inspire members of the New City family to meet the practical and spiritual needs of their neighbors.

Why East Africa?

A focus on East Africa with other global outposts sets us in a part of the world where both population and Christianity are growing. By 2050, 1 in 4 people on earth will be African, and over the past century, Christianity in Sub-Saharan Africa has grown approximately 6000%—the fastest growth happening anywhere in the world.

The East Africa region is made up of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Horn of Africa, comprising Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. As we sought God’s direction for how he wanted us to help people find and follow Jesus globally, this region became the clear focus point.

We have historic partnerships with several organizations, including Hiinga, Edify, and All Nations, that are demonstrating the love of Jesus in East Africa through ministries of mercy. Additionally, our global church planting partner, The Timothy Initiative, is primed to plant 2,000+ churches in the next few years.

Who are we working with on this project?

We know there’s wisdom in a multitude of counsel. We’ve spent over two years putting together a great team for Here, Near, & Far, beginning with our elders, leadership team, and CFO, and including these partners, who have each undergone a thorough vetting process.

Berkeley Consulting Group – Owner’s Rep/Project Management
Elevate Group – Generosity Consultant
Myers & Chapman – General Contractor
LS3P – Architect

What about parking?

By the end of Phase 3, we will provide over 500 parking spaces through a combination of onsite facilities and the largely available parking lot at Carmel Road Park, which is largely empty on Sunday mornings. Additionally, we have established a solid partnership with Carmel Middle, allowing us to utilize their parking as a satellite lot if necessary.

Can the SouthPark congregation continue to worship onsite during construction?

We have strategically approached the phasing of our project to ensure that worship at SouthPark continues uninterrupted throughout all phases of construction.
